Mini Moment #27 - Nervous system resets that actually work for salon owners – with Sharelle from Miss Lash

You can be off the floor, home, sitting still, and your body still behaves like something is about to go wrong. The phone buzzes and your heart goes before your brain does. That is not you being dramatic. That is a nervous system that has been running on alarm so long it has forgotten there is another setting.

Sharelle from Miss Lash The Studio is back in the Inner Sanctum, and she, Sam and Jen have all been working on the same thing this year, from very different directions. This is a short, honest conversation about what actually brings you back down. Yin yoga for one, prayer for another, a Sunday morning at the markets before it gets busy. None of it is complicated. Most of it is free. All of it starts with deciding you are allowed to give something back to yourself after a day of giving it all away.

There is a lot in here you could start this week, and none of it asks you to add another thing to a life that is already full.

What we cover

  • What a nervous system reset actually means when you are the one giving all day
  • Yin yoga, prayer, movement, and finding the thing that regulates you rather than the thing that works for someone else
  • Why a busy supermarket can tip you straight into overwhelm, and what Sharelle does instead
  • Buffer time between appointments and how a spare half hour changes the shape of a whole day
  • Rushing woman syndrome and why cramming wellness in does not help your nervous system
  • Your phone as an invitation, not an obligation
  • Turning off notifications and getting free of that little red number
  • Five tasks on the list instead of fifty, and why ticking things off actually works
  • The 90 second rule, and why you never reply to a one star review while you are heightened

Calm is not a personality type. It is a handful of small decisions you keep making.

FAQs

What is a nervous system reset?

It is anything that moves you out of fight or flight and back into rest and digest. For Sharelle that is yin yoga, for Samara it is prayer, and the point is finding the one that works for your body rather than copying someone else's.

How do salon owners get out of fight or flight during the working day?

Small resets built into the day work better than one big fix at the end of it. Buffer time between appointments, notifications switched off, and a shorter task list all lower the load before it builds.

Why should you wait before replying to a bad review?

A strong emotion runs its chemical course in about 90 seconds, so anything you send inside that window is written by the heightened version of you. Australian salon owners deal with reviews and client messages constantly, and waiting until you feel steady almost always gives you a better reply.

Yeah. Okay. So we are talking nervous system resets because everyone in this room kind of right now has been working on a nervous system reset recently.

[:

So like, I feel like that nervous system shift of how we do that, how we get- Yeah ... out of fight or flight. I feel like we go through seasons of like such hectic fight or flight. Mm-hmm. And we're all on this- Chronically. We're all on the, on the other side of this going like, "I just want my nervous system to be so chill."

Aw. Yeah.

[:

[:

[:

[:

Like it was like so bad, whereas now I just like, anytime my phone buzzes now, it's just like-

[:

[:

[:

[:

[:

[:

[:

[:

[:

[:

[:

Oh, I love it. It's like a stress reliever. It's so good. Mm. And it's nice to give yourself that moment because you have been the one giving the other person the moment. Mm. When they're stressed, when they're going through something, when they're having a big day. So to give yourself back that either at the start of the day or like the end of the day, has been such a nice thing.

And then you're moving your body as well. It's in a different way of, rather than working your body and, you know, doing all the steps and doing all these things and trying to get to the next thing. Mm. It's like it's not about that. It's about being present and then moving. Is it called your fascia?

[:

[:

[:

[:

[:

[:

[:

[:

Mm-hmm. Like I walked into the... I'm digressing right here.

[:

[:

Mm. So I've created myself a routine where I have, on a Sunday morning, 6:00 AM, I go to the markets at Hodda and I just be. Mm. And I just be. I let myself be there, 'cause it gets fricking so busy- Mm ... at Hodda Markets. I don't know if you've ever been there past 8:00. Yes. Yeah. It is cooked. But have that moment where I sit and just have my little, I don't know what they're called, mirror-

[:

Yeah. Doo, doo, doo. Just so everyone knows, that is the soundtrack to my life. It's the song out of Practical Magic. Yeah. Do you know what I'm talking about? Yes, I

[:

[:

[:

[:

Like, just kind of... That's how, that is the literally the song. I'm gonna put it up so everyone can laugh tomorrow. That is the song I think of when I'm building my life.

[:

[:

and butter, and I'm making it out of all of this stuff.

[:

[:

[:

Like, get out. Mm. Mm. Get out. Because I could just see the difference. Mm. Like, there's half price things, and this, and colors, and that, and I'm like- I'm overwhelmed. I need to get out of here. I've

[:

And I go to Pilates- Love it ... at 7:15. Mm-hmm. And I get there at 7:00. I give myself 15 minutes. Yes. It's all I need. Oh my God. Berries and bread, and we order that our cow.

[:

[:

[:

[:

That's why we bought a big property- Mm ... 'cause I just wanna be at home- Mm-hmm ... in my- Yeah ... space with nothing around me, and I wanna- Mm ... start growing stuff. But it's like those are the certain- Mm ... weird things. Stop laughing at me. Lee will grow stuff. I won't. Lee will. Dad might.

[:

You never know.

[:

[:

So like, say I've gotta go to, well, I'm getting my nails done next. I've got a half an hour buffer for me to get there, find a park, and just take a minute.

[:

[:

Rushing,

[:

[:

[:

[:

[:

Yeah. Like, give yourself those buffer moments, those small little increment moments throughout your day so you don't get to the point where you're like, oh, you kinda stay at this level of calm. Mm. And you walk into each appointment or each thing that you do back at your base level- Yeah ... and back at your rest and digest.

[:

[:

[:

Mm-hmm. Yeah. Whereas I used to feel, like, overwhelmed- You have to get back to them ... if there was messages sitting there. Mm. I've gotta get back to emails, I've gotta get to- Mm ... back to messages. That's the only way that things will move. That little

[:

[:

[:

Oh, you guys need to turn off the notifications. You turn it off. Turn off, I've done it on my phone, turn off all notifications except text and, like, the main ones that you got.

[:

[:

Yeah.

[:

[:

[:

But I'm always thinking of, like, it seems- It's always on your mind ... I don't ever want anyone to think it's rude, because I'm thinking- Mm ... of that thing all the time. Like- Yeah ... it's on my, like even as Rich needs things done, it's always on my list. Mm. I'm always trying to get the things done. But I'm like, I'm always like, you know, I will organize podcasts and stuff behind the tracks.

So it's always happening, and the conversations are al- always going in my head. Mm. But I'm like, there's no point in me responding back, 'cause then I'll forget. Let me organize it, and then I'll tell you this. First. Yeah. Yeah. You know? So it's all of the things are always sitting there and ticking over. But what I found is, like, on a Monday I give myself this to-do list, and last Monday I had such a big to-do list, I felt like by the end of the day, because I didn't pack one box which was on my list, I was like, "Oh, it's a failure."

What's the point?

[:

[:

[:

[:

[:

[:

[:

[:

[:

Like, it can't just be all these ticks when you have to like scroll down- ... to find your new tasks. Like, good job, you've achieved them. But he does too. Yeah. I'm like, I saw you just put that on the list. I saw it's already been done. And also being okay with saying no to things that you can't- Mm

make happen.

[:

[:

[:

[:

[:

[:

[:

[:

[:

[:

[:

[:

[:

[:

Feel good. Like, it's like you've gotta find the thing that keeps bringing you back to that. Write it down in that moment. Yeah. And just keep trying to chase that feeling- Mm ... of like, oh, I feel really like calm and serene and I'm good to go. And that's when your energy pours out in any project that you do so much better-

[:

[:

or something you need to do, do not do it when you're heightened. Terrible thing.

[:

[:

[:

[:

[:

[:

But

See you soon.
