Mini Moment #16: The Power of Knowing Your Why & Purpose
What if the reason your business feels heavy… isn’t the workload, it’s misalignment?
In this Mini Moment, we’re sharing a behind the scenes masterclass from inside Rising Finances Online and Solo Rise Online. This is the foundational work our members do early on, defining their why, their purpose, and their core values.
Because here’s the truth: if you don’t consciously decide how you want your business to serve your life, it will quietly start running you instead.
Your values are your compass. Your why is your anchor. And your purpose is the filter every big decision should pass through.
What we cover:
- The power of defining your why
- Values as your business compass
- Misalignment as a hidden cause of burnout
- Growth that aligns with your life
- Building a business that reflects you
This isn’t mindset fluff. It’s practical clarity.
If your business feels noisy, heavy, or disconnected, it might be time to come back to your values.

Welcome back to The Inner Sanctum, Salon Rising, the podcast Mini Moments brought to you by Timely. Now, today's mini moment is a mini masterclass from Inside Rising Finances Online and Solo Rise Online. It's part of the curriculum our members work through, and today we're giving you a little behind the scenes listen, so I hope you enjoy.
Welcome back. This is a mini masterclass chat about why it's important to know your purpose, your values, your why for a business owner. Cause I know that some people will be like, I don't need to know that. I think it's extremely important to know that. I think we're humans inside our business.
Yeah. And I think especially for us being small business owners, I think even massive corporations should know these things, but when we're running small businesses led by us, by our whys, our purpose, our values, it's so important that we know this so we know how to run our business from it. And, everybody at the end of the day is inside their businesses doing all the services being in their business, giving to their clients. And I think that when it feels sticky and hard, being able to operate from, your why, your purpose and your set of values is almost like your compass within your business. Do you feel like if you're getting a level of burnout and resentment from your business that perhaps, you're trying to run without putting you in it, you know, like you're operating to other people's values and other people's, purpose and not absolutely like that would be an identifying factor, right?
We were having that discussion this morning. Yeah. And we were talking about the importance of, , if you didn't want staff and you were operating a business that had staff for example. Okay. That would over time burn you out. You don't actually want to be a leader of staff. You want to just do the head, you know?
So if your values aren't aligning to that, the burnout will come with it. Yeah. So for me, for example, being an owner who had staff, I. I don't think I could work anymore just full time on the floor for me because my why is to be able to pick my children up every day, drop them off every day, be at every event.
I really work within the restraints of school hours and the salon can't just open school hours to suit me five hours a day. So for me, having staff allows me that. But there's so many operators that are like, I don't want the noise of staff because that's also super hard. So I don't want the noise of that.
So at the end of the day, they love the fact that they have certain restraints, but it's their whole business is within their control. And that's beautiful because you don't have the noise of anyone else.
You just have your business noise. You don't have to deal with sick days, holiday days, staff that are leaving, employing staff. So it's a different set of noises. So I think being able to have your values, your purpose, your why allows you to make decisions from actually something that you've written down and you know you want.
Okay. So rather than making decisions, for example, as I said, if somebody was like, I love doing hair, I love being on the floor with my clients, or I love doing brows. That's what I want to do all day every day. Don't take me off the floor. And they're thinking, shall I buy a salon with 10 people in it? Yeah.
It just doesn't, you're not going to be able to do that. You're not going to be able to do that and run a business of 10 people. Yeah. So it allows you to make these decisions. off a place where you actually have sat down and dedicated time to knowing where these things sit.
If you, for example, really value family and time with your family, I wouldn't suggest at this current point in time, opening three different salons. Yeah. Because you're going to lose the time at this point in your life. On that you're not going to be able to spend that time with your family because you're going to be building these businesses So it is definitely something you can look at over time.
But for me right now There's no way I would open another salon because it would take my time away from my family. And that's my why For me right now I wouldn't look at opening another salon because my purpose within this business is To cultivate a community and relationships and relationships that I know that that would be taken from me.
I would have no time to foster both. Yeah. You know, my values sit around family and community. And so when I look, would I buy another salon? None of that would align to that decision, I've also made these, commitments, values, whatever it is.
I look at my values. I look at my purpose. I look at my why's. I've made that when I'm in a really neutral space. So doing this work, you sit down, you make it in, there's nothing else going on. It's not like that's burning down or that's going splendidly. You just do it in a neutral place. . We've got to come back to neutral, come back to neutral to make a decision, come back to remember what you actually want. Yeah. So, you know, I talk about this on the podcast about how important this is in life values when you meet somebody, how important that both your values line up.
Yeah. Yeah. If one of your massive values is communication, and you're with someone that hates conflict or any conversations like that, you're going to have, that hardness within that relationship. So values really, even from the beginning, allow you to really align with what feels right for you.
Yeah. Okay. Same with things like your why and your purpose, every decision that can be made within your business comes from that. But outside decisions when you come to your why can come to that. If Friday nights is your family night and it makes you feel really alive and then someone says, Oh, do you want to go out on Friday night?
You can make decisions based on that. Yeah. Yeah. So I just think it's coming from a really neutral point when you've written this down and it feels good and you can come back to it when things feel explosive, good or bad. It allows you to realign back into Okay. When I was in a really neutral, good space with the business, these were my top values.
This was my purpose and this was my why. Yeah. So now let's look at this at an overall and make choices from this because you are the human in your business. And I think a lot of people lose that, like everybody knows in a small business that it feels like you become your business, but you actually really becoming your business in a way that makes sure that your values and your, you know, Why isn't your purpose aligned to that?
Or are you doing it in a way that you just become your business because you come robotic because your business is exhausting? Well, is it that you become your business or your business should become you? Yeah. Yeah. And I think it's really important to look at because your business always reflects that.
I remember going to a spiritual healer once and I think I said something about the business and he was like, well, you just are your business. And I was like, whoa. And I really think that aligned with me because. We know that we're, when we're in a negative, bad state, business can feel the same way. And when we're not, and we're hot, like we're feeling good.
The business moves with us as well. Like we know this dramatic, I know this in all my businesses, and that's not to say that that's bad because we are humans and we're here like as humans first and our businesses become a part of our lives.
And I think it's important to know that as well and be able to kind of ebb and flow within your business with that. , I've had many times where I'm like, I'm done, I'm out. And if I came back to my why, my purpose and my values, I would realize I'm just having a bad day or a bad week.
And I would re step back into it and be No, because every time I walk into my business, if I've had a bad week and I haven't been in the business, my team have been running it and I think everything's too hard. I think, you know, is this an extra stress? I don't need. And then I'll walk back into my business and I am like, why am I not here more?
Like this place fulfills me so deeply, but I think the same can happen in the opposite, right? And you can just keep and just wondering why. And then you come back and you realize you've taken your business completely away from those, from those things that are like that foundation that you were aiming and striving towards.
And I think we've seen that a lot. And I think it would resonate with solos who, you know, like have gone on a journey because it just felt like the journey. And then all of a sudden they're like, I didn't want to be here. I liked being back here. So get back there. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And we had that discussion on a podcast.
About the fact that, we feel like we need to do the next thing and do the next thing and do the next thing. Don't get me wrong. I 100 percent think the importance of growth, we need to keep moving. Yeah, yeah, absolutely. We need to keep moving. But are we growing in a way that still aligns with our values and purpose and our why?
Yeah. So are we growing? Because we think the next thing is getting a staff member and then, , getting another staff member and then getting another staff member and we get to five staff members and we think, I hate this. Yeah. Or we're growing in a way that's like, I'm going to make my experience better so I can charge more.
Yeah. I'm going to outsource social media. I'm going to charge more. So yeah, becoming more specialty in that field so that you can still do everything and feel really connected to your business and really love it and really feel like this is exactly what I'm meant to be doing. I earned great money from it.
I've got people that support me in it and this is where I'm meant to be rather than being five staff members down, not making any more money and just feeling exhausted. Yeah. And that friends is why. Your why, your purpose, and your values are so important. So important. So, I would say they're three things that you need to reflect on all the time when it comes to your business.
